OPWDD’s Division of Statewide Services is pleased to announce the following Continuing Education (CE) training opportunity:
Training: Autism, Elopement, & Water Safety
Presenters: Lori McIlwain, Caleb Hudgins, Ph.D., & Kristin Sohl, M.D.
Training Description:
This training will offer a clear, practical look at autism-related elopement, and why water poses a unique risk for autistic individuals. Led by the National Autism Safety Council, this training draws on national fatality surveillance data, real case examples, and current research to explain the connection between elopement and water attraction across the lifespan. Participants will leave with concrete strategies to help reduce risk at home, in schools, and in the community, along with tools for building an emergency response plan.
This training is open to professionals seeking continuing education credit through OPWDD as well as families, care managers, administrators, school personnel, and caregivers. All are welcome!
At the conclusion of the training, attendees should be able to:
- Identify the primary variables that contribute to elopement and water related risk in autistic individuals across the lifespan.
- Describe evidence-based strategies for reducing elopement and drowning risk across home, school, and community settings.
- Apply current research and case data to inform safety planning and response protocols for autistic individuals and their support networks.
Please note: This training contains discussion of fatality data and case examples involving loss of life. This information is shared to support prevention efforts. Attendees may find this content unsettling.
When: August 6th, 2026; 12-2pm.
Where: This program will be broadcast live via Webex. Registration and program access will require SLMS access.
Cost: Free.
How to Register: Autism, Elopement, & Water Safety is available in the SLMS under class code OPWDD-AEWS-20260806-12PM. Click here to enroll. You will be prompted to sign in to the SLMS.
For detailed instructions on how to use SLMS, visit the SLMS Reference page on the OPWDD website. For questions about accessing the training in SLMS, please contact Talent Development and Training at talentdevelopment@opwdd.ny.gov.
Please review the participant guide provided at time of registration for additional information related to training access and retrieval of CE certificates.
CE Contact Hours: OPWDD’s Division of Statewide Services will generate a certificate valid for up to 2.0 CE contact hours. Certificates will be made available for participants present for the entire duration of training. Partial credit hours are not available.
Psychology Continuing Education Credit: The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists (#PSY-0243). New York State Licensed Psychologists who attend this class in its entirety will receive 2.0 contact hours toward renewal of their psychology license.
Social Work Continuing Education Credit: The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (#SW-0777). New York State Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) who attend this class in its entirety will receive 2.0 contact hours toward renewal of their social work license.
Mental Health Counselor Continuing Education Credit: The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for mental health counselors (#MHC-0290). New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) who attend this class in its entirety will receive 2.0 contact hours toward renewal of their mental health counselor license.
